Blasting of cooling towers at the old Boxberg power plant

On Friday 6 December at 11:03 a.m., the three remaining cooling towers of the old Boxberg power plant in Upper Lusatia (Saxony) were blown up in a controlled manner.

The 113 metre high cooling towers were part of Plant II of what was once Europe's largest lignite-fired power plant. In future, the site will be home to the battery storage facilities of the ‘Gigawattfactory’, a wind power and photovoltaic centre planned by LEAG on the post-mining areas of the opencast mines in the region.

Renewable energy with a total output of 7 gigawatts is to be generated here by 2030.

For the blasting of the cooling towers, GuD prepared a vibration forecast for the neighbouring parts of the power plant that are still in operation in order to ensure the undisturbed operation of these plants during and after the blasting of the cooling towers. During the blasting, we monitored the vibrations of the neighbouring structures and the ground vibrations in the vicinity of the blasting using measurement technology.
