Exhibition hall 12, 2nd and 3rd construction phase

 Reconstruction of the Soviet pavilion at the Old Leipzig Trade Fair Centre,

The former Soviet pavilion at the Old Trade Fair Centre in Leipzig, Hall 12, is being completely rebuilt while preserving the historic building fabric. The entire project comprises 3 construction phases. The 1st construction phase of the former Soviet pavilion has already been completed. In the 2nd and 3rd phases behind it, a multi-storey building with a basement is being built on an area of around 12,000 m². The old exhibition hall has already been dismantled down to eight of the historic existing frames and the south-eastern façade, the so-called portico. The excavation pit for the planned new building will be 5 metres deep due to the need to replace the soil. For this reason, the existing building of the first construction phase, which does not have a basement and is founded on piles, as well as the portico and the individual foundations of the existing frames had to be secured. This was done for the individual foundations and the portico by underpinning using the jet grouting method.

This was also planned to secure the 1st construction phase. As no clearance could be given for this work due to the explosive ordnance soundings under the new building, the contractor's special proposal was implemented. Otherwise, the excavation walls were predominantly embanked or secured with soldier pile shoring. The wastewater collector running through the construction site poses a challenge. As neither the originally planned underpinning nor the contractor's special proposal for securing the first construction phase was possible here, steel beams were placed on both sides of the sewer in jet grouting columns.
