For the new construction of the Sony-Center at Potsdamer Platz, the soil of the 27.000 m2 ground area was explored by means of numerous exploration wells and exploratory work. For the construction of the excavation both a considerable excavation of the soil as well as a significant subsidence of groundwater were necessary (up to 13 m below groundwater level). The excavation pit was constructed as a trough construction pit with reinforced concrete slotted walls (sheet pile walls of up to three anchor layers set in the slot) and soft-gel sole. The foundation of the skyscraper finally took place as a combined pile-slab construction.
